The fall colors are bright around him in the mid-morning light, the sun-crisp grass yellow and reedy along the cracked pavement of the road to Chris'. Zach looks out over the flat plain that stretches out through the rest of the modest Midwest neighborhood, out east, toward the city. As he passes the unkempt yard on the corner, he plucks a goldenrod from the fence line.

Chris wakes up to an empty bed with a handful of hot coals shoved down his throat. Groaning, he rolls onto his back, kicking futilely at the sheets tangled around his legs, and looks groggily around the empty room. He's sick, goddamnit, and he hates waking up sick, especially waking up sick alone.

Chris steps off the city bus onto the dusty ground, gazing up at the big marquee letters: CARNIVAL. He drops his cigarette to the dirt, scuffs it into the earth with his toe, and shoves his hands deep into his pockets. He starts out for the first soul he can find.

Fall begins to take a turn for winter as the carnival rolls on to the next town. Chris lies awake next to a slumbering Zach snuggled up to his side. He watches the dark ceiling, jostling lightly with the movement of the wagon, and strokes a gentle hand through Zach's hair.

Zach pushes through the tent flap and sees Chris sitting on the vanity bench, leaning in to Zoe. He has a pencil clutched in one hand, the other hand holding Zoe's chin softly, tipping it this way and that as he evens out her eyeliner. Finally, with one last flick of the pencil to touch up her cat eye, Chris leans back and smiles.

Spring is melting nicely into summer as Chris crosses to the big top with a sandwich in hand. He pushes through the heavy canvas flap to see Gabe up on the trapeze, alone in the tent, practicing a tricky flip. Chris pauses to watch, admiring the lines of Gabe's body, the way his shorts and tank top hug his frame... He shakes himself out of it and steps forward into the ring, smiling up at Gabe.
